Recipe: Living Lemonade

How good is lemonade? Even just the thought of cooling, tart refreshment gets the taste buds stirring.

This drink is one of those you only really 'get' after you've tasted it a few times. It revolves around the funky, fermenty 'not-sure-i-know-where-this-is-going_but-i-like-it' vibe residing within Experience N.13 // Catalyst.

@malted_pete describes this one as a 'living whisky'. Of course, there's nothing actually alive in it... but the aromas bring to mind those wild notes you find in natural wines or sour beers.

Whilst farmy flavor notes might not be everyone's cup of tea- for some, there's something alluring about them once you get over the initial oddness. Like lots of the best things in life! (Negronis, black coffee, blue cheese, mushrooms - the list is endless!)

Pete certainly had fun blending this one and the result a very unusual, captivating dram. When working out interesting ways to drink this we initially kept things very simple. Then we didn't.

Lemonade as a category is up there with cola on the whisky mixer naughty list - which made it all the more fun to play around with as a mixer. But unlike cola, you can create lemonade at home pretty easily. Lemon, sugar, soda water... done!

we kept this one pretty punchy - allowing the swirling notes of the whisky to shine, keeping the carbonation mild and balancing everything around the whisky. Somehow experiencing it through the familiar lens of lemonade highlights the freakyness of this dram and a whole new layer of unexpected flavours not perceivable neat emerge from the taste. Mind-bending stuff.
